REPORT | Blues battle to beat Caldy
Bedford Blues fought bravely to dig out a 20-8 victory over Caldy and make it five Champ Rugby wins in succession.
It was a game that really could have gone either way, but Bedford just have the most remarkable record under their home Friday Night Lights and nothing was going to stop them notching up another victory at Goldington Road.
Blues will probably feel frustrated in the review and believe they could have gotten all five points - quite a few chances went abegging, particularly in the first half, but Blues stuck to task and continued to ask questiosn and eventually got their rewards.
A performance based largely on a phenomenal workload from the forwards - an excellent lineout, scrum faltered a little at the end but provided a solid enough base, and phase after phase of hard carries amid sodden conditions. Man of the Match, Kayde Sylvester reflected last week that it was like playing with a bar of soap, and this even worse at some points.
Will Maisey scored 15 points on his own, including a cracking opening try - surpassing 900 club points in the process.
As Caldy had to fight from their own 22m with the final passage of play, Lucas Titherington picked them off with a cracking intercept to wrap up the points - a nice positive against his former employers. Intercepts are becoming quite tidy at Goldington Road of late!
Speaking after the game, Titherington said: "Gritty is the perfect word for it. Let's celebrate the win tonight - a nice reward at the end for a good performance with the try."
