Blues Women captain Kelly Hodgson reflects on today's 40-5 victory over Hitchin Ladies...
Bedford Blues Women returned to Goldington Road this weekend to face Hitchin in the local derby, a fixture missing from the calendar for the last two seasons.
Hoping for a large crowd to bring the vibe, Blues Women were joined on the pitch by one of the Junior Blues mascots (pictured below). Thank you for your support.
Bedford started cautiously absorbing initial pressure (and an unconverted try) from Hitchin before hitting their stride with a try from Lauren Mason in the 30th minute, converted by the ever reliable Lucy Middleton. Blues cemented their lead with further tries from Hunter and Claire Cranfield, both converted by Middleton.
Advancing into the second half, 21-5 up and expecting a fight back from Hitchin, Briony Shepherd increased Blues lead with a further try. Middleton contributed a converted try of her own with Emma Graham closing the scoring 40-5 to Bedford Blues Women.
In the week that player profiles went live, with the squad sharing their favourite pre match songs, it is a surprise that Alicia Keyes 'This girl is on fire' didn't feature. This would be fitting for a number of players across the squad today.
The work-ons identified at West Norfolk were executed well today, with breakdown support much improved and Middleton's kicking game on point.
The team's final match of 2025 is away to Colchester. An unknown opposition who offer the opportunity to test and challenge the squad once again before the Christmas break.
