REPORT | Blues run in eight tries for Scottish victory
Bedford Blues returned to winning ways with great aplomb as they ran in eight tries at Goldington Road to comfortably see off London Scottish with a 54-26 success.
Blues were at their vintage best at times during the contest, scoring more breathtaking tries, but they also left a lot to be desired in equal measure for a mixed reaction from the coaching staff post-match.
Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer commented: “After last week, we had to show a bit of pride and passion. Couple of things to work on and we left a bit out there, but at least we’re creating the chances.
“I’m hyper critical of everything and we’re all after perfection. We should have put them to the sword early in the game but fair play to them for showing some incredible fight and they deserved their bonus point.”
Blues raced into a 28-0 lead inside 22 minutes with some vintage attacking rugby, perennial try scorers Dean Adamson and Ryan Hutler getting the ball rolling with a try from each wing.
The home side weren’t afraid to run nearly every opportunity and a delightful try started inside their own 22m saw Joey Conway crash over for number three, swiftly followed under the sticks by James Lennon.
London Scottish fought for everything and a perfectly executed chip and chase for Noah Ferdinand had them on the board, before Theo Vukasinovic went over with a rather exuberant celebration.
Lennon’s second try pouncing on a spillage near halfway to end the half halted the brief comeback of the visitors to give Bedford a 23-point advantage at the break.
Blues were perhaps a little complacent after the break but were still able to run in a further three tries. Ilan Evans went over off a driving maul for his first in Blues colours, while Tommy Herman and Billy Pasco both profited off clever plays.
Again Scottish refused to give in quietly and when Matt Wilkinson crashed over from close range, they had the try bonus in their sights. The driving maul became a useful weapon for the visitors late on, and a penalty try off it got them something for their efforts.
Blues’ Archie Hosking, making his Champ Rugby debut, added: “An amazing feeling. It’s been a long time coming after the long-term injury so far this season, and really important to get back to winning ways even if we probably did switch off at times.”
