REPORT | Blues Women battle to Stamford win
Captain Kelly Hodgson reports on Bedford Blues Women's 22-10 victory away at Stamford which saw Eddie Rennell's side extend their lead at the top of the table to six points with six matches left to play.
Bedford Blues Women underlined their title ambitions on Sunday with a composed and resilient victory, overcoming early pressure to maintain their unbeaten run in NC1 this 2025-26 campaign.
Blues made the ideal start, striking inside the opening minute from a well‑drilled lineout maul. Emily Wallbank peeled blind to finish, and Lucy Middleton converted to give the visitors a 7–0 advantage.
Stamford responded with intent, capitalising on sustained territory to run in two unconverted tries that swung the momentum their way. Their direct, physical approach disrupted Blues in the opening quarter, forcing the league leaders to absorb pressure and reset.
Gradually, Bedford began to re-assert themselves. The forwards tightened the contest at the breakdown and collisions, and after a powerful spell near the line, the backs exploited space out wide for Claire Cranfield to touch down her 16th league try of the season.
The game’s pivotal moment arrived just before half‑time when Blues were awarded a penalty try. Katherine Simpson, chasing what would have been her third try in as many matches, was tackled off the ball over the line, leaving the referee with little option. The score sent Blues into the break 19–10 ahead but fully aware of Stamford’s reputation for dominant second‑half performances on their downhill slope.
What followed was a display of steel and collective discipline. Stamford mounted repeated attacks, but Blues’ goal‑line defence held firm, denying the hosts any route back into the match. Middleton added a late penalty to give the visitors further daylight, sealing a result built as much on resolve as on execution.
