REPORT | Blues Women secure knockout plate progression
Kelly Hodgson reports on Bedford Blues Women's 42-10 victory over Chinnor Kites, a result that sees Eddie Rennell's side into a first Quarter Final appearance from their fledging years since inception.
With eight matches scheduled across the next nine weeks, Head Coach Eddie Rennell utilised squad rotation to balance rest and playing opportunities ahead of a demanding period.
Blues made the ideal start against unfamiliar opposition, striking within the opening two minutes. A smart chip‑and‑chase was gathered by Emma Graham, who crossed for the first try, converted by Lucy Middleton.
Both teams exchanged strong phases of attack and defence before Emily McBarron powered over to extend the Blues lead. Middleton again added the extras, and a further try from Graham, followed by another Middleton conversion, sent Blues into half‑time 21–0 ahead.
The second half brought several replacements, but Blues continued to play cohesively. Now operating at fly‑half, Graham identified a gap and accelerated through for another well‑finished try to complete her hat-trick, also going on to convert the score herself.
This was followed by a superb solo line‑break try from Angel Boateng, extending Blues' dominance.
Chinnor then responded with their first try of the match, scored by Rosie Begley, capitalising on sustained pressure to get onto the scoreboard.
Blues hit back quickly with another powerful line‑break score, this time from Katherine Simpson, again converted by Graham. A perfect day for the duo who shared the kicking responsibilities, going 6/6 off the tee in front of the watchful eye of Will Maisey, one of a number from the men's team in attendance.
Chinnor closed the game with a second well‑worked try, this time from Charlotte McDermott, narrowing the gap but unable to threaten Blues’ commanding lead from there until the final whistle.
A strong all‑round performance from Bedford Blues Women - highlighted by attacking flair, scrum control, and an effective tactical kicking game.
Blues now look ahead to next Sunday’s trip to Stamford for a top‑of‑the‑table clash between 1st and 2nd. A fixture not to be missed in Lincolnshire.
