Emma Graham reports as Claire Cranfield steals the show by running the length with the clock in the red to leave Bedford Blues Women on the cusps of the NC1 (East) title thanks to a 27-24 victory over Colchester Iceni.

In one of the most intense and emotional fixtures of the season, Bedford Blues Women edged a dramatic victory over Colchester, with the result decided in breathtaking fashion in the final moments.
Blues’ points came through a standout performance from Claire Cranfield, who crossed the line three times, alongside a try from Berri Clarke. Lucy Middleton added the extras with two conversions and a crucial penalty, keeping the scoreboard ticking in what proved to be a tightly contested battle.
Colchester arrived with a clear and effective game plan, and for large spells — particularly in the second half — they executed it well. Strong running lines, well-worked attacking phases and sharp passing combinations saw them break through Blues’ defence and keep the pressure firmly on.
But this was a game defined by resilience.
Across the pitch, the work rate was relentless. Big hits, clinical passing and tireless effort at the breakdown kept Bedford in the fight. Every player stepped up, contributing to a performance built on determination and belief.
Then came the moment.
With the game hanging in the balance, deep in our own 22, captain Kelly Hodgson produced a crucial interception from a Colchester lineout. What followed was a defining passage of play — forwards digging deep to recycle possession under pressure, before the ball found its way to Claire Cranfield. From our own try line, Claire produced a moment of magic. Linking up seamlessly with Katharine Simpson through quick 1–2 passing, she surged upfield to score a stunning try and seal the win at the death.
Goldington Road erupted and I have never experienced anything like this before. What a moment for the players and fans. This was the place to be!
This victory wasn’t just about individual brilliance; it was a full squad effort. From the matchday 22 to those supporting on the sidelines, the injured players, and the coaching staff — this performance reflected the unity, depth, and belief within the squad.
