Oisin Heffernan extends stay at Goldington Road
Bedford Blues conclude their first week of re-signings with the news that tighthead prop, Oisin Heffernan has re-committed his future at Goldington Road for 2026/27 Elior Champ Rugby.
Heffernan joined the permanent ranks three years ago and hasn’t looked back since, becoming an ever present in the squad for a total of 88 appearances, scoring 18 tries.
With two games to go until the play-offs, Heffernan is currently the joint highest scoring forward in Mike Rayer’s squad.
On deciding to continue his spell, Heffernan said: “I am absolutely delighted to stick around for another year. The whole front row union this year has dug deep and worked hard to try and help us all achieve our goals.
“I’m not sure there’s one thing to pinpoint as to why we’re having a really impressive 25/26 season but certainly we’ll be looking to all buy in and find ways to build that brotherhood again.
“There’s a great culture here at Bedford Blues, led by Mike who drives from the top.”
Heffernan, who works for main club sponsors SDC Builders Ltd, surpassed 100 appearances in the second tier 12 months ago and will be looking to do that specifically in Bedford in the upcoming campaign.
Representing Leinster in the formative years of his senior career, Heffernan moved across the Irish Sea to Nottingham, where his performances with the Archers persuaded Northampton Saints to take him to Premiership Rugby.
He made infrequent appearances alongside an initial loan spell at Goldington Road, before making the move permanent in 2023.
Director of Rugby, Rayer added: “To say that Ois has been a cornerstone of our pack is an understatement. He’s probably had the most minutes of any tighthead in the league and he’s certainly someone that the team and coaching group rely on heavily.
“He’s shouldered that burden and showed some incredibly consistent performances across the season. Every squad across rugby needs a powerful tighthead and we’re certainly fortunate to have Ois with us again.”
