Will Maisey continues spell in Bedford
Bedford Blues conclude their first day of re-signing news with the announcement that influential fly-half Will Maisey will extend his time at Goldington Road into the 2026/27 campaign.
The 33-year-old has been Blues’ top points scorer in every full campaign since joining in March 2020, and recently became the first player since James Pritchard in 2007 to surpass 1,000 points in club colours.
Looking wider afield, Maisey also went through the 2,000 career points total in December’s victory at Cornish Pirates. He is less than 100 points away from becoming third in the all-time Blues list, behind only Pritchard and Andy Finnie.
On extending his stay to a seventh full campaign, Maisey said: “You can see on everyone’s faces that this has been another really enjoyable season, so I’m absolutely delighted to stick around for 2026/27.
“From a personal perspective, it’s been a great few years at the club and I’m excited to carry this journey on even further now everything is confirmed for next season.
“Bedford truly is home for me now and I love representing this town every week. It’s a really exciting time to end this current season – we’ll give it our best as we always do and hopefully, we can do the #BluesFamily proud.”
Maisey’s finest hours in Bedford colours have seen him lift the coveted Players’ Player of the Year award at the End of Season Awards Dinner in 2021/22, before backing that up by being Championship Rugby’s top marksman twice in recent years.
Twelve months ago, he was the final recipient of the Bedford Rugby Followers Association Player of the Year award, and will be in strong contention for the new Supporters Club version this time around following multiple Man of the Match performances this season.
A proven Elior Champ Rugby operator, Maisey has spent the majority of his career at this level following prior spells at Nottingham and Coventry.
Starting his career at Butts Park; the playmaker made his Coventry debut at 18 whilst playing in National One, before gaining his first taste of life in the Championship with Nottingham.
Maisey spent only one season with the Green and Whites before a year’s spell at near neighbours Ampthill.
A return to Coventry followed for the start of the 2016/17 campaign, where Maisey helped secure promotion back to the Championship in 2018, firmly embedding himself as an important part of the West Midlands club making 123 appearances and scoring 794 points.
He made the short hop down to Bedford shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic and has been a mainstay ever since, setting the standards for his peers and helping lead the execution of the ‘Blues Way’ style of play on the pitch.
Director of Rugby, Mike Rayer added: “Will continues to get better year on year. He’s actually helped shape and direct our DNA for several seasons now and he’s one of the key components of our playing group. We’re glad he’s around to grow our game again next season.”
