REPORT | Heartbreak in Champ Final

Posted: 31st May 2026

It was a heartbreaking way to conclude the 2025/26 Elior Champ Rugby campaign as Bedford Blues suffered a 27-14 defeat to Worcester Warriors in the Play-Off Final at Goldington Road.

An incredible season, and while the team couldn’t quite get the chocolates in the showpiece finale, they continue to punch above their weight and make Bedford proud.

This was a celebration of what Blues had achieved all season, not what they had missed out on on the day. To be the only club privileged to host a final, with neutral venues from next season, is something to behold. And reward for finishing second in the table for successive seasons.

A second Goldington Road sellout of the season, ensuring an average attendance of north of 3,000, and who knows maybe the greatest of modern times. That is still to be ratified.

You run out of superlatives to describe the team this season. There might have been the cherry put onto the cake, but it was a pretty big cake in the first place.

This town continues to back its rugby club and we should all be proud of that fact. Being at home for a final, with one another, something to behold. Defeat only goes to fuel the first for next season.

In the wise words of Sam Roberts before kick-off… ‘Whatever the result, we’ll still be the best rugby club in the land.’
