REPORT | Blues Women make it a champagne weekend

Posted: 11th October 2026

Emma Graham reports as Bedford Blues Women continued their superb start to the 2026/27 campaign with a resounding 66-5 success over Birmingham Moseley Women.

A champagne weekend after yesterday’s Ladies Day celebrations at the club, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to sign it off!

Homecoming in style! With our first game of the season back at Goldington Road, we picked up exactly where we left off last season.

After a tense second half in our last game against Sheffield, the screws were tightened over the last two weeks of training, and it was pleasing for the coaches to see the development in those areas in such a short space of time.

Defensively, Blues really set the tone. Dominant tackles, strong rucking and a real hunger to win the ball back made life difficult for Birmingham throughout the 80 minutes. The work rate across the pitch was relentless, with the team showing just as much pride in their defensive sets as they did going forward.

It doesn’t come as a surprise to see Katharine Simpson’s name on the scoresheet again, this time with four tries! But it was great to see a few other names getting in on the action, with tries from Laura Stephens, Alivia Usher-Harris (pictured above), Angel Boateng, Jodie Mallard on her debut, and of course a brace from Claire Cranfield.

Along with Jodie, we had a home debut from Bailey Dixon who controlled the game well and supported the cohesion between the backs and forwards.

Credit must go to Birmingham Moseley, who, in similar style to Bedford, won their league last season and are experiencing life in Championship Two for the first time. Their heads remained high throughout, and they constantly looked to work the ball despite the pressure from the Blues defence. We wish them well until we meet again after Christmas.

We’re back at Goldington Road next Sunday, 18th October, as we welcome Lincoln Ladies to Bedford for another first-time meeting.

As always, we need our #BluesFamily behind us, just as you were today. A massive thank you to the 272 supporters who came through the gates and made plenty of noise throughout the 80 minutes. Your support never goes unnoticed!

A brilliant way to mark our return home, but plenty more work to be done, it doesn’t stop here.
