The excitement of a new Championship season has ramped up with confirmation of the fixtures for the 2019/20 campaign which will include a Boxing Day derby against Ampthill at Goldington Road.

With 4,500 fans descending through the Bedford Blues gates on 26th December 2018 for a friendly fixture, rugby fans will be able to get their festive feast once again when the Blues take on Ampthill in the highly anticipated competitive fixture.

The Bedfordshire sides will actually face off four times over the course of the season as they have been drawn into the same Championship Cup group alongside old foes Ealing Trailfinders and Coventry with the first three games being played in the opening three weeks of the new campaign which kicks-off on Saturday 21st September.

As in its inaugural season, teams have been split into three pools, playing across six rounds with the pool stage fixtures all completed before Christmas. The top two teams from each pool together with the two best runners up across the three pools will all proceed to the Quarter Finals which will be followed by the Semi Finals and Final which will take place in May next year.

Bedford will open their Championship account with two away trips to Yorkshire and Coventry respectively before hosting Ealing Trailfinders in Round Three. Other key fixtures include the annual Ladies Day encounter which will coincide with the first clash against Ampthill on Saturday 5th October; the visit of former Premiership side Newcastle Falcons on Saturday 9th November; and the Blues Beer Festival against Coventry on Friday 7th February. The Championship will conclude with a home game against Yorkshire on Saturday 9th May 2020.

Speaking about the fixtures, Blues and Championship Chairman Geoff Irvine said: “It may only be June and the boys have only recently returned to pre-season training, but everyone is excited about the coming campaign and what lies ahead.

“We had a fantastic season last year with a third placed finish and we’ll be doing all that we can to continue pushing for the top spot while also battling hard in the cup. We’ve got a tough draw, but with a much more local edge this season, every round will be like a final.”

RFU Director of Professional Rugby Nigel Melville said: “We’re all looking forward to the upcoming season and the fixtures comings out will provide a focus for clubs as they start to prepare for their first games. Last season produced some fantastic performances and we’re all looking forward to more great rugby next season.”
